UBC Formula Electric
Design Projects (Year 1-2)
In my first year on the team, I helped manufacture the aero kit, body panels, and accumulator enclosure, and contributed to the design of enclosure mounting tabs, closeouts, and the steering rack cover. In my second year, I was the lead designer for the Vehicle Controller (VC) enclosure. I resolved critical packaging constraints by proposing a dual horizontal-vertical PCB configuration to the electrical team, then designed a multi-part enclosure to accommodate both components while meeting IPX5 waterproofing standards.
What
- Manufactured structural and composite vehicle components for the competition car
- Designed IPX5-rated waterproof electrical enclosures and mounting systems
- Led the Vehicle Controller enclosure design in Year 2, resolving critical packaging constraints
How
- Modeled mounts, enclosures, and tabs in SOLIDWORKS
- Planned and executed carbon fiber and glass fiber composite layups for body panels and aero kit
- Proposed dual horizontal-vertical PCB configuration to the electrical team to solve packaging issues
- Designed and validated 3D-printed enclosures against IPX5 waterproofing standards with custom test fixtures
Results
- Delivered reliable body, aero, and enclosure components integrated into the competition vehicle
- All enclosures passed IPX5 waterproofing validation
- Gained hands-on experience in composite and 3D-printed manufacturing workflows
